The New Year

SAM_1285I just received some incredible news and I can’t talk about it. Sorry about that. But I can say that 2015 is already taking the shape of an exciting year.

With the wonderful news of my daughter’s up-coming marriage, and the great conference in April for Houston Writer’s Guild, I can talk about a few great things to come.

My daughter is marrying a kindhearted, loving young man who, when he proposed to my daughter, gave my little grand daughter a ring at the same time. That’s what precious memories are made of.

The upcoming conference will be at the Houston Marriot Westchase in April. There are a lot of details that we will be adding to the houstonwritersguild.org website soon.

For some this past year wasn’t easy. I’m so sorry if that was the case for you. I know the sad things happen, the horrible things, the crushing things, because we live in a world that, as C. S. Lewis described it, is bent. Some day this world will be straightened. I hope that your new year will have only the best in it. This is short. I really wanted to simply get on here to wish all of you wonderful friends a brilliant 2015 and the same to all your loved ones.

November 2015: News You Can Use

What happened?

I’ve been somewhat absent from my newsletter/blog for a month. Writing a new novel takes a lot of butt-in-chair time.

The Work-in-Progress. You can see the "timeline" on the cork board.

I’ve heard of National Novel Writing Month for as long as it’s been around. I never thought I would actually do it. I did this time. NaNoWriMo was the impetus I needed to finally write a solid first draft of Token, that YA (Young Adult) work-in-progress that I’ve been telling you about for the last year. I went into the month with four chapters that were not good. I spent some time improving those. I had close to seven thousand words to start. I needed 50,000 words to win (or complete) NaNoWriMo. You see, it’s a national challenge. I probably should point out that now NaNoWriMo is an international challenge. Many people win. I’m not the only one. I have 53,000 words today. There will be more by December 1. I’m officially going to the big TGIF (thank God it’s finished) party at River Oaks Book Store. Yay!!

This is the end of the receipt from a Barnes & Noble in Pasadena. Do you see Deadly Thyme down at the bottom? Whoo! Hoo!

Now, the News:

Denise, Fern, Sarah, Me

November 8 was the Houston Writer’s Guild’s first mini-conference under the new leadership team. The team consists of Denise, Fern, and myself. Denise and Fern are the new owners of the Guild. I am honored they picked me to help them steer the course. Our mini-conference was a rocking success with a good showing of members and new folks anxious to learn the craft of writing. Sarah Cortez an esteemed speaker and winner of many writing awards for her poetry books, was our speaker. People said that the day went by so fast they couldn’t believe it. There was also lots of food with breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack.

Now for the News You Can Use:

SAM_1233_edited-1March 28 of 2015 we will hold a one day pitch practice conference to help members of HWG get their pitches and presentations ready for the BIG CONFERENCE. At the pre-conference we will have actual agents for members to pitch their novels, and screenplays to. More details to come.

The next big thing is the Amazing 2015 HWG conference. There will be several agents from NYC there. We will have some Texas agents and editors and publishers there. Friends, this is Big Time! There will be agents looking for folks they want to represent to the big six publishers in NYC. There will also be a lot of break-out sessions about how to self-publish, the art of craft, the business of doing it, the “how to” market it. More details to come.

Down on The Farm

One of the things I did do this month besides have some amazing books signings around town was that I took Cora to visit my brother on his farm. We picked vegetables, Jon took us to visit the menagerie, we petted his AKC Siberians, and Jon gave us some eggs (nicer than any from the store). I want to show you some pictures from that day.SAM_1240

And I wanted to show you some artwork that my amazing sis-in-law did. She drew this from composite photos of her trips to Egypt. She painted it with coffee. Okay, you can say “wow” too.SAM_1243

Happy Thanksgiving!

SAM_1264It’s the end of the month and I want to thank you for sticking with me in reading my blog, especially when there are weeks between offerings. I appreciate every one of you. May God richly bless you in this holiday season.

I thank the Lord for His loving kindness, and mercy in keeping our family safe and well.

Don’t eat too much and watch out for the crazy drivers.

To Infinity and Beyond (Texas)

This past week we had a wonderful panel discussion (Women of Mystery) at the Barnes & Noble on West Gray.

I wanted to share this interview with everyone. My neighbor is too fascinating not to know better. Learn about this dauntless spaceman with the following link to my other blog, EastMontroseCool.com. My blog isn’t very colorful today. So if you go here: To Infinity and Beyond  you’ll see another photo.

Then, know that you are all in my thoughts as I traipse across Texas these next two weeks. I’m going to the Texas Book Festival this weekend. It is such a huge deal and I’m so happy to be going. I’m there to not just promote my books but to promote The Houston Writer’s Guild. If you haven’t checked out this organization, please do: houstonwritersguild.org. And while your at it, sign up for the November 8 workshop with prize-winning author Sarah Cortez. She will be speaking about “How to Finish Your Novel” among other things. There will be an acquiring editor there to take pitches. And what an attractive thing to think that all this comes with LUNCH! LOL!

Next weekend I’m off to Midland, TX to speak at the library there. I will take pictures this time.

My brother and I hope to visit my aunt in the San Antonio area this next week. I haven’t seen her since she dropped everything she had going in her life to help out my mother when my dad went into the hospital with Pancreatic cancer in 2007. My father’s death led to tremendous and earth-shifting changes in my life because my mother was almost an invalid at the time. My aunt stayed with her and helped her get stronger both physically and mentally. My aunt was always a selfless person. Now she is up in age. We just found out she is on hospice, and we feel the need to go see this lovely and loving woman.

That’s my week. How is yours shaping up?

Re-Blogging vs Copyright Infringement

This is such an appropriate blog for these days. It’s so easy to copy and paste anything anywhere.

Savvybookwriters.wordpress.com has had more than 275,000 readers as of last week and I am very grateful for over 1,100 subscribers and comments. The blog articles, tips and links I work on, often for hours or even days, such as this old one, but still THE most popular, got even copied and pasted into other peoples blogs – even so there is a RE-BLOGGING function on all WordPress sites.  It is easy to use: just click on it, write your own comment and have your subscribers get curated content – you save time and you don’t run into possible copyright problems.
.

Re-blogging is considered legitimate sharing when the original source is obvious and available, linking to the original source, comparable to sharing on Facebook, where it includes the link and where only a small portion is shown. Readers can then follow the link…

Rejecting Rejection with Nikki Loftin

One of my special writing friends has written a thoughtful reflection on what it means to be rejected and the different kinds of rejections. And why she won’t stop doing what she does despite rejections and negative reactions to her work.

Rush!

SAM_1226_edited-1If I were in college my blog title today would imply I might be trying to get into a sorority. If only such a simplicity of purpose was part of the make-up of my world, our world. RUSH. The word means 1. move fast. 2. attack suddenly. 3. act or move at high-speed. 4. urge to an unnatural speed. 5 cause to move fast or race. 6. advance the ball by running into the line.

Most days begin for me at 5:30, which isn’t a bad time, I’ve had worse. I help out with my grand girl so her mom can go to work. I love that I get up with the sweetest little face in the world next to mine. We sing a song from Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood that goes like this: Get up. Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Brush teeth, and go to school.

And that’s what we do. Only it’s not my school, it’s hers. She’s in preschool.

Some mornings the YMCA is next. I participate in a stretching and balance class. Then home to spend time on social media, sometimes too much time because it is my favorite procrastinating tool. Usually there is something pressing that needs to get done. This week I made a website for my husband. http://www.Nolendental.com. Monday my mother-in-law had a pacemaker put in but then she lost some ability and had to go to rehab. I’m hoping she gets better soon. My husband is very concerned about his mom and concerned with the dental practice he just opened. Spending time away from it isn’t good.

I’m interjecting a dog picture here.SAM_1222_edited-1 I hope it makes you smile. He makes me smile.

Life intervenes doesn’t it? I had this wonderful conversation with another writer yesterday at my book signing. I love book signings, I meet the most fabulous people. She and I were discussing the fact that between children, spouses, illness, aging parents, broken things that need to be fixed, fixed things that break again, emergencies, exhaustion, driving, sleep, non-sleep, a need to spend time with friends, eating, and life in general, there isn’t much time to do the creative thing that sets us free and lifts our spirits. The thing that keeps the bad thoughts, the put-down thoughts at bay. Because most people have negative feelings about themselves. And writers and artists are loaded with negative feelings and thoughts about themselves and their work. It’s what keeps us on edge, or angry, or sleepless. It’s what drives us to do the thing we need to do, that creative thing, writing, art, music.

Life is messy, inconsistent, and consequential. You must work around it. Stay up late, get up early, exercise. Drink water. Sit up straight. Sing the Daniel Tiger song.

Hey, You!

Yes, You, the one who wants to accomplish a thing of beauty. The one who has dreamed of one day writing a novel, or painting an amazing painting, or playing a minuet, or singing in the opera. You are not alone. Here comes life, with the important things, the immediate things, the urgent things. May it always be. Don’t ever say to yourself – “one day I’ll do…”. Do it now, because “one day” isn’t ever going to get here. You won’t reach that day because on that day something else will call your attention away. So guess what? That day is here.

I’m hoping you have friends who will understand, a spouse who will cook you supper, a mother who will keep the kids. Or if you don’t, I hope you investigate and discover all those moments that you could dedicate to your art, are moments hidden within the viewing of television (how about that Sherlock series?) or in reading, or in busily doing social media of some kind. So give up the television (you can record it), the novels (for a time), or the social media, or whatever you do that you think is helping you relax because it isn’t. If you are an artist of any kind, you need to practice your art to relax.

Don’t take my word for it.

Begin again.

Go!

P.S.S. I told Eliza that I would share her wasp joke.

Where does a bee go when its sick?

To the waspital.

A Cut in Time

2014-07-13 15-51-14.217Hello friends,

Last week the skin doctor separated a suspicious spot from my scalp. It’s at the top of my head. You would have to be taller than me to see it, which means everyone will be able to see it.  I’d rather have a bald spot than a suspicious one.

When she was sewing me up it felt like I was getting a face lift. I was thinking “more, more”. I believe my ears are a little higher. I like.

This coming Friday and Saturday September 19 & 10,  I’ll be at the Kroger on West Gray signing books. Please come by and purchase some cookies or sushi and say hello! You can’t miss me. I’ll be with the wasp!

The next Friday I’ll be at the Kroger on Shepherd and 11th street in the Heights. I love my Kroger visits. I see a lot of people, many of whom are surprised to discover that they want to buy a book with their groceries.

It’s been quite rainy these past few days here in Houston. We had a cold front last weekend. It was so so so wonderful. Normal temperatures here in September are in the 90’s. Last weekend we had 70’s. With this new rain, it’s back to 90. Here’s a tropical picture or two for you. This is a tree in the front yard. It was three feet tall when I planted in this past spring. The first is a shot from the balcony. My camera fogged up as soon as I walked outside.SAM_1205 The second is the flowers it is loaded with. It’s some sort of hummingbird tree. I don’t know the name of it.

SAM_1216When it rains it’s hard on anyone in the house because of the dog. He barks frantically, trying to get out of the house to bite the thunder. Yes, I know, that’s insane and yes, our window coverings behind the couch are in a shambles. Poor puppy. We give him doggie meds before the storm but they hardly slow him down. I think it’s like morphine for people, you still feel the pain but it doesn’t matter. Even in his drug-induced fog he still hears the dread thunder so he goes crazy. And 80 pounds of crazy is a lot of crazy. Here he is in his normal non-rain state – Sleepy lie-ins all day and no drugs.SAM_1054

Don’t Miss Out on Christie Craig’s Workshop!

coconut palmOkay, the coconut palm that I’m gazing at as I lie in my hammock on the beach is to catch your attention, not to make you jealous. Well, it’s okay to be a little jealous.

*clears throat.

Even if you are not currently a writer, you may have the desire to write a book “when you get the time”. There is no time like the present (yes, a cliche but so apropos) to get inspired and encouraged. Come join us at Grace Methodist Church on Heights Blvd, Houston, TX next Saturday, September 13. The address is 1245 Heights Blvd. The time is from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. To sign up and ensure you have a spot go to http://www.houstonwritersguild.org.

I’m looking forward to it. Hope to see you there because I will be back home in Houston then!

Pearls of Wisdom

<A middle school teacher asked me to come up with something that would let her students know that a first draft is not a final draft.>

Writing is easy, right?  Wrong.

To prove my point think of the bestseller ‘The Fault In Our Stars’, it should be easy to write a teenage love story that connects with people of all ages, right?  Wrong.
John Green spent four hours every day writing, it took him three years to ‘complete’ it until he sent it into his publishing house.  Once they got a hold of it John Green spent another four years re-writing and approving edits before the tome was put on bookshelves and became an international sensation.
I began writing my first published short story ‘Blood On The Potomac’ when I was 28 (and that’s about how old you should be before you read it).  I spent at least an hour…
